Why Mindfulness Alone Does Not Help Burnout

I DECLARE WAR on the inadequately put together piece meal "Physician Burnout Programs".  Okay, I'm going to say something shocking here ladies.  MINDFULNESS ALONE WILL NOT ELIMINATE BURNOUT.

These hospitals and academic centers that think that Mindfulness alone is going to help you get done with your charts on time, improve your work flow, get home earlier are DEAD WRONG.

I mean, how is taking a deep breath going to get you more time with your kids? How is it going to give you time to reconnect with your significant other or spouse? How is it going to help you to get more sleep so you can feel rested and recovered for those long brutal days.

Look, I'm not knocking mindfulness…. I'm just saying that while they are doing studies on mindfulness and implementing programs that teach you to "take a deep breath" when you are stressed, they are missing CRITICAL elements that could actually produce measurable results in having you feel more energized, alive and happy again.

Here's what's missing:

What's missing is that they are not getting to the root cause of the burnout itself... Much like ithe practice of medicine, when you get to the root cause of the burnout, you eliminate the problem at it's source rather than simply put a band-aid on it while it continues to fester beneath the surface revealing it's ugly symptoms from time to time.
